Road trip to the countryside

A picturesque getaway to the stunning land of endless mountainous ranges and scenic coastlines

Wales

Mapped by green fields that seem to have no beginning nor end, Wales is a country that lives up to its reputation as one of the most effortlessly gorgeous and tranquil places in the United Kingdom. Ethereal and timeless - the natural beauty of the place put us in peace as soon as we arrived. We sought a quick escape from the ever-busy pace of city life and we found ourselves in the right place to experience the joy of slow-living.

The drive to the countryside, although long, was indeed rewarding. As soon as we left England, we seamlessly entered the territory of Wales and the scenery enhanced with the treasures that Mother Earth has to give. Endless fields covered with deep-green grass revealed on both sides; strong mountain ranges graced the horizon; flocks of sheep roamed the grounds undisturbed. It seemed that no human presence was even allowed as the deeper we travelled into the country, the more gorgeous and raw the views became.

We reached Prestatyn within a couple of hours. The town located on the Irish Sea coast was the home of our friends whom we were visiting for the weekend. They showed us around and in true Welsh fashion made sure that the weekend was packed up with outdoor activities. The first thing on the itinerary was to hike up the mountains from where a gorgeous view of the town in the distance revealed in front of us. On the second day we ventured to the seaside, where all of our friends braved a quick morning swim in the sea. I was the only one who chose to wait on the beach as the water during mid April was still too cold for my liking. It seemed we weren't the only ones who decided to dip our toes in the sea - it was a beautiful day and people took full advantage of the shining sun by going for long walks and taking their dogs for a run to the beach.

The weather only grew warmer as the day advanced and we had time to enjoy more time outside. Their quiet neighborhood was everything one can expect from a town in the heart of the Welsh wilderness. The houses were built in timeless fashion - tidy and spacious, yet not too grand. The people seemed to all know each other and there was a sense of a community that can be difficult to come across in bigger cities. The Rhaeadr Dyserth Waterfall was just around the corner and so were a few beaches to choose from.

By late afternoon we were packed up and ready to say our goodbyes to our friends and the beautiful Welsh countryside. One thing was certain - connecting with nature left us feeling energised and at peace. Slow living is definitely the key to balance a lifestyle in the city and we couldn't be more grateful to our friends for opening their home to us and showing us around.

It had been about two years since we first visited Wales. We planned a trip to Cardiff where we enjoyed a few days walking around town to fully immerse ourselves in the culture. We visited many coffee shops and cool restaurants to taste delicious food from tacos to ramen and vegetable stews.

Just as we longed to return to Wales after we visited the first time around, this time it was no different. The gorgeous trip had us vowing that we would plan another trip to Cymru, as the castle capital of the world had us charmed and craving more nature-filled experiences.
